Academically
To be eligible for participation in the Hamilton Township School District’s Interscholastic Athletic Programs, a student must be enrolled in the school district and submit on a district form the signed consent of his/her parent(s) or legal guardian(s). The consent of the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of a pupil who wishes to participate in interscholastic athletics must include an acknowledgment of the physical hazards that may be encountered in the sport. In addition, the student must meet all the eligibility requirements established by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (N.J.S.I.A.A.).
The academic requirements for athletic eligibility are as follows:
- To be eligible for athletic competition during the first semester (September 1 to January 31) for the 10th grade or higher, or the second year of attendance in the secondary school or beyond, a student must have passed 25% of the credits, which is a minimum of 30 credits from the previous year.
- To be eligible during the second semester (February 1 to June 30) of the 9th grade or higher, a student must have passed the equivalent of 12 ½ % of the credits, which is a minimum of 15 credits earned from the first semester of that year (September – January).
Medically
Each student’s medical examination shall be conducted at the medical home (family physician) of the student, and a full report sent to the school (Athletic Director/Nurse/Designee). If a student does not have a medical home, the District shall provide this examination at the school physician’s office or other appropriately equipped facility. Parental permission for participation in the sport and a medical history must be provided to the school prior to the medical examination. Contact the Nurse’s Office, Athletic Director or visit your schools athletic website to obtain all forms associated with an athletic physical.
A. An examination of each candidate for a school athletic squad or team shall be conducted within 365 days prior to the first practice session. Students participating in more than one sport season must be checked and cleared by the school nurse for each season. Only one comprehensive physical exam is required for each school year.
B. The school physician has the absolute and final authority to determine the physical capability of a pupil to participate in a sport.
C. To participate on a school athletic squad or team, each candidate whose medical examination was completed more than 90 days prior to the first practice session shall provide a health history update of medical problems experienced since the last medical examination. This shall be completed and signed by the parent.
